Dr. Kailash Chandra Samal

Professor, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding,
School of Agriculture

Dr. Kailash Chandra Samal is a distinguished academician and researcher with over 35 years of experience in teaching, research, and extension in the field of plant sciences. He completed his B.Sc. (Hons) in Agriculture from Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), Bhubaneswar, followed by an M.Sc. in Biotechnology from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, and earned his Ph.D. in Biotechnology from Utkal University. He was awarded prestigious fellowships including DBT Fellowship and CSIR-UGC Fellowship during his academic career. He has made significant contributions to plant genomics, plant breeding, molecular biology, and biotechnology. He established advanced research facilities and pioneered work in molecular breeding, tissue culture, DNA fingerprinting, and bioinformatics. His research includes development of cost-effective micropropagation protocols for crops like banana, ginger, turmeric, sugarcane, stevia, and sarpagandha. He has also contributed to molecular marker development for clonal fidelity and genetic characterization of diverse crops including rice, ragi, wheat, sesame, pulses, and vegetables. Dr. Samal has played a key role in the development of climate-resilient and short-duration rice cultivar “Navarna” and has successfully isolated and characterized abiotic stress-related genes such as DREB, which are deposited in GenBank (NCBI, USA). He has authored more than 18 books and over 125 peer-reviewed research papers with more than 1500 citations (h-index: 19; i10-index: 42). He has successfully handled multiple externally funded research projects supported by UGC, DBT, RKVY, and Ministry of Agriculture. He has guided over 40 postgraduate and doctoral students who are now placed in prestigious positions globally. In addition to research, he has contributed significantly to curriculum development, teaching innovations, and science communication. He is an active reviewer, member of interview boards, and mentor to young scientists.
